Fast rising singer/songwriter Martha Skye Murphy joins the Class of ’21
Who: Martha Skye Murphy
What: From working with Nick Cave to releasing a bunch of critically acclaimed EP’s and singles over recent years, Martha Skye Murphy is someone who’s music we’ve loved for a while now and we know she’s gonna do special things this year
Why: “The inner-world of Murphy’s songs serve as a teasing parallel to her own career which as it twists and turns feels like it too is playing with our expectations. What comes next is anyone’s guess and everyone’s’ gain.” The Line of Best Fit
I’ve been listening to a lot of John Tavener, the purity of his music and the way he creates such expansive, minimalist, contemporary sounding pieces with seemingly traditional means is bewitching to me. I’m feeling very inspired by choral music in general: Thomas Tallis, Montserrat Figueras…there’s something about the voice, its limitlessness, its intimacy, that really turns me on!
My three EP releases: The Late Departure (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Heal and Yours Truly, working with producers Andrew Sarlo and Fabian Prynn… there’s been lots of highlights, I really enjoyed some discussions I had about Michael Haneke’s The Seventh Continent and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s The Dance of Reality for Tank Magazine – I like talking about other people’s art more than my own!
Collaborations with Squid, Maxwell Sterling, Dil Harris among others, and a new project I’m working on which I can’t reveal yet!
LEYA, a curious harpist and violinist based in NYC, their music sounds like Jeff Buckley if he were transposed into a medieval drone.
